1. Critical Reasoning

Critical Reasoning is the most important part of the NMAT Logical Reasoning syllabus. Around 15-20 questions can come from CR.

This is significantly more important in NMAT than in exams where Critical Reasoning has a smaller role. Therefore, if you are preparing for NMAT LR, Critical Reasoning should be one of your first priorities.

Conclusions and Inference

You may be given a statement or a short case and asked to identify the conclusion or inference that follows from it. Questions may provide multiple inferences, such as:

  • Inference 1
  • Inference 2
  • Inference 3

You then have to select the correct combination.

Assumptions

Assumption-based questions may use a short paragraph or case. You have to identify what is assumed from the information given.

These questions require you to understand what is actually supported by the statement instead of adding information from your own understanding.

Arguments

Argument-based questions can ask whether an argument is strong or weak. You may also get questions asking:

  • Which option strengthens the argument?
  • Which option weakens the argument?
  • Which argument is strong?

These are important areas to practice because they form part of the CR-heavy nature of NMAT LR.

Point-Based and Paragraph-Based CR Questions

NMAT Critical Reasoning questions can broadly appear in two formats.

Point-Based Questions

A problem statement may be followed by two or three statements, arguments, inferences or courses of action. You have to determine which of them is correct.

Usually, two or three options/statements are given, while four can appear in a more difficult question.

Paragraph-Based Questions

A short case or paragraph can be followed by questions related to:

  • Assumptions
  • Conclusions
  • Inferences
  • What the author is most likely to do or believe

The paragraphs can be short cases of around 50–80 words, so you need to read the information carefully and identify what logically follows from it.

2. Analytical Reasoning

The second major part of NMAT LR is Analytical Reasoning. This includes puzzles, arrangements, Input-Output and other miscellaneous reasoning topics.

Arrangement-Based Puzzles

You can expect around 1–2 puzzle sets. The exact combination can vary. Important arrangement types include:

  • Linear Arrangement
  • Circular Arrangement
  • Two-Row Arrangement
  • Grid-Based Arrangement

The puzzles can involve people, flowers, colours, fragrances, tools, metals, cities, professions and similar combinations.

For example, a puzzle may involve people sitting around a table or different objects being associated with different properties.

The questions are generally of a moderate level. They are manageable if you have already practised basic arrangement questions during your preparation.

3. Input-Output

Input-Output is a must-do topic for NMAT Logical Reasoning. Usually, one or two Input-Output sets can appear, with four questions in a set.

The exact combination can change from one paper to another. You may get one arrangement set and one Input-Output set, or two Input-Output sets, depending on the paper.

What is Asked in Input-Output?

You are given an input and a sequence of steps. Your task is to identify the logic used to transform the input into the subsequent steps. The logic can be number-based or word-based.

Number-Based Input-Output

Number-based questions may involve operations such as:

  • Multiplication
  • Subtraction
  • Squaring
  • Addition
  • A combination of operations

For example, a transformation can follow a simple pattern such as multiplying a number by two and subtracting one.

However, the logic can also be more complicated, so you need to identify the relationship between the steps rather than assume a fixed operation.

Word-Based Input-Output

Word-based Input-Output questions can involve arranging words or numbers. Possible patterns include:

  • Alphabetical order
  • Reverse order
  • Alternating numbers and words
  • Other combinations of words and numbers

4. Syllogism

Syllogism is a high-frequency NMAT LR topic. This topic that appears almost every time. Therefore, Syllogism should be completed before moving to less frequent topics.

5. Fact Statement

Fact Statement is another important NMAT Logical Reasoning topic. You are given a set of facts and have to determine which other facts follow from them.

The format is somewhat similar to Syllogism. It can also be treated as a Critical Reasoning-type question because you need to logically evaluate the given information.

6. Set Theory and Venn Diagram

Set Theory, also referred to as Venn Diagram, is another important topic. A three-set Venn Diagram can be used, and questions may involve:

  • Maximum
  • Minimum
  • Optimization

You can expect one or two questions from a Venn Diagram set. This is different from a four-question DILR set because the Venn Diagram can appear as an individual question or a small set.

7. Logical Venn Diagram

Logical Venn Diagram is a relatively easy topic but is worth preparing because a question is very likely based on the trend. Questions can involve groups such as:

  • Doctors
  • Engineers
  • Soldiers

You may be given numbers representing different groups and asked to determine how many people belong to one group but not another.

Because the concept is straightforward, it can be a useful topic to cover during preparation.

8. Number Puzzles

Number Puzzles can involve a grid, circular arrangement or another structure containing numbers. Some numbers are provided while one or more numbers are missing. You have to identify the missing number using the pattern in the question.

A question from Number Puzzles can appear among the miscellaneous LR questions.

9. Order Ranking

Order Ranking questions involve positions or ranks. For example, you may be told the position of one person in a row and the position of another person. You then have to determine how many people are sitting between them.

This is a lower-frequency topic compared with Critical Reasoning, Input-Output and Syllogism, but it should still be practised.

10. Alphabet and Number Series

Alphabet or number series-based questions can also appear in the NMAT LR section. These are part of the miscellaneous topics and may become more relevant when the paper contains fewer puzzle or Critical Reasoning questions.

11. Clocks and Calendars

Clocks and Calendars are also part of the NMAT Logical Reasoning syllabus. A Calendar question was seen in the previous year, making this a topic worth covering even though it is not among the highest-frequency areas.

12. Blood Relations

Blood Relations is a less frequent NMAT LR topic. A question from Blood Relations was observed in an earlier paper.

The exact distribution is not fixed. The paper can have different combinations of CR, puzzles, Input-Output and miscellaneous questions.
