Baby IIMs: Are They Worth It? Fees, Placements & Honest Verdict

Baby IIMs - Are They Worth It MBA KARO

You scored 93 in CAT. The call came from IIM Bodh Gaya, not IIM Bangalore. And now the group chat is split — half saying “IIM is IIM, take it,” half saying “₹20 lakh for a 13 LPA average? Think.”

Both sides are partly right. Baby IIMs are the nine newest Indian Institutes of Management, set up after 2011: Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Jammu, Kashipur, Nagpur, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Trichy and Visakhapatnam.

They carry the same degree-granting powers under the IIM Act, mentored by the older IIMs — and the same fee tag that comes with it.

The honest answer isn’t yes or no. It’s which one, at what fee, against what alternative. Read ahead to know the real numbers before you accept that offer.

Baby IIMs 2026: Complete Comparison Table

All nine at a glance. Fees are indicative for the 2026–28 batch and vary by hostel and mess components — always confirm on the institute’s official website before paying.

InstituteEstablishedMentor IIMApprox Fee (2026-28)Qualifying CAT %ile (General)
IIM Trichy2011IIM Bangalore~21.00 lakh90–94
IIM Kashipur2011IIM Lucknow~17.30 lakh90–94
IIM Nagpur2015IIM Ahmedabad~19–21 lakh90–94
IIM Visakhapatnam2015IIM Bangalore~20.50 lakh82
IIM Bodh Gaya2015IIM Calcutta~19.52 lakh85–94
IIM Amritsar2015IIM Kozhikode~21.50 lakh85–94
IIM Sirmaur2015IIM Lucknow~20.00 lakh85–94
IIM Sambalpur2015IIM Indore~19–21 lakh85–94
IIM Jammu2016IIM Lucknow~20.70 lakh85–94

Note the gap between qualifying and final cutoffs. Qualifying percentiles sit at 82–94, but final converts often land in the 95–97 percentile band once academics, diversity and PI scores are folded in. A 90 gets you a call. It doesn’t get you a seat.

Baby IIM Placements 2026: The Numbers Nobody Puts on the Poster

This is the section you actually came for. Figures below are from the latest reported placement season (2024–26 batch).

Kashipur and Trichy have not published comparable 2026 MBA reports at the time of writing — treat their figures as expected until officially released.

InstituteHighest CTCAverage CTCMedian CTC
IIM Nagpur69.57 LPA18.07 LPA17.03 LPA

IIM Visakhapatnam32.50 LPA15.72 LPA15.00 LPA

IIM SirmaurNot reported13.30 LPANot reported
IIM Bodh Gaya (MBA)22.00 LPA13.00 LPA12.00 LPA

Read that Amritsar row again. 19.11 LPA is the average of the top 20% of the batch, not the whole batch. It’s a legitimate way to report — plenty of B-schools do it — but it is not comparable to Bodh Gaya’s 13 LPA, which is a full-batch average. Comparing them side by side is how aspirants get misled.

Second honest point: that 69.57 LPA at Nagpur is one offer. One. The median — the number that describes an actual normal student — is 17.03 LPA. Always read the median, never the highest.

The ROI Table: What ₹20 Lakh Actually Buys

ROI multiple here = full-batch average CTC ÷ approximate total fee. It’s a crude metric — it ignores the loan interest, two years of lost salary, and taxes — but it’s the fastest reality check available.

InstituteApprox FeeFull-Batch Average CTCROI Multiple
IIM Nagpur~19.50 lakh18.07 LPA~0.93x
IIM Jammu~20.70 lakh16.04 LPA~0.77x
IIM Visakhapatnam~20.50 lakh15.72 LPA~0.77x
IIM Sambalpur~20.00 lakh15.65 LPA~0.78x
IIM Sirmaur~20.00 lakh13.30 LPA~0.67x
IIM Bodh Gaya~19.52 lakh13.00 LPA~0.67x

Not one Baby IIM crosses 1.0x on full-batch average. Compare that to the older IIMs, where Bangalore and Ahmedabad clear roughly 1.3–1.4x on fees of ₹24–25 lakh, because the packages scale faster than the fees do.

So no — the IIM tag alone does not print money. What it does is give you a floor.

A 13 LPA median from a two-year-old brand is still ahead of most private B-schools charging the same ₹17–19 lakh and delivering 8–11 LPA averages.

The Baby IIMs win the comparison they’re actually in. They just lose the one aspirants imagine they’re in.

Who Should Say Yes (And Who Shouldn’t)

Your SituationHonest Verdict
90–94 %ile, no better call, first attemptTake it. A repeat year costs you ₹15–18 lakh in lost salary anyway.
96+ %ile, strong academics, fresherConsider a retake. You’re one good VARC day from a New IIM or BLACKI.
Choosing between a Baby IIM and a ₹18 lakh private B-schoolBaby IIM, almost always. Same money, better degree, better recruiter floor.
Targeting BFSI, analytics, general managementStrong fit. These sectors dominate Baby IIM recruiting.
Targeting MBB consulting or IBBe realistic. Those roles are thin here and go to the top decile.
3+ years work-ex, already at 12–14 LPADo the maths carefully. The ROI may not clear your opportunity cost.

At MBA Karo, the aspirants we see regret their decision most aren’t the ones who joined a Baby IIM.

They’re the ones who joined any IIM for the tag, without a sector plan, and finished in the bottom half of a batch where the bottom half doesn’t get 18 LPA.

The Honest Verdict

Baby IIMs are worth it — conditionally. They’re worth it if you’re at 90–94 percentile, if you’re comparing them against a private B-school or a lost year, and if you go in knowing the median is your realistic outcome and the ₹20 lakh sticker is real debt with real EMIs.

IIM Nagpur, IIM Amritsar and IIM Visakhapatnam currently lead on outcomes; IIM Kashipur stays the value pick on fees.

They’re not worth it if you’re joining because a WhatsApp forward told you the IIM tag guarantees 25 LPA. It doesn’t. Nothing does.

But here’s the more useful truth: the cheapest way to improve your ROI isn’t picking a different Baby IIM — it’s showing up at CAT with a higher percentile.

Four extra percentile points change your entire fee-to-package equation. If you want a structured plan and exam-level mocks to get there, the MBA Karo CAT course can keep your prep honest.
