NMAT Quantitative Skills Questions
The following NMAT practice questions cover Time and Work, Probability, Number System and Data Interpretation.
1. Time and Work
20 men can complete a piece of work in 15 days, while 15 women can complete the same work in 10 days. Six men and four women begin working on the task.
After 6 days, X men are added to the group so that the work can be completed in another 4 days. Find the value of X.
Answer: 40
Solution:
Work done by 20 men in 15 days = 300 man-days.
Therefore, 1 man’s one-day work = 1/300.
Work done by 15 women in 10 days = 150 woman-days.
Therefore, 1 woman’s one-day work = 1/150.
Thus, 1 woman = 2 men in terms of work.
So, 6 men + 4 women = 6 + 8 = 14 men.
Work completed in 6 days = 14 × 6 = 84 man-days.
Remaining work = 300 − 84 = 216 man-days.
This remaining work has to be completed in 4 days.
Required workforce = 216 ÷ 4 = 54 men.
Therefore:
14 + X = 54
X = 40
2. Probability
There are 4 chess players in the first year, 5 chess players in the second year and 6 chess players in the third year of a college.
What is the probability of selecting a team of 4 chess players such that at least one player belongs to the first year?
Answer: 69/91
3. Number System — Rationalisation
A number X is represented by the recurring decimal:
2.18181818…
By what least positive integer should we multiply X so that the resulting number is an integer?
Answer: 11
4. Data Interpretation (Caselet)
A company manufactures only three types of vehicles: bikes, cars, and trucks.
In 2021, the number of bikes manufactured was 40% of the number of bikes manufactured in 2022.
- The number of trucks manufactured in 2022 was 25% more than in 2021.
- In 2022, the number of trucks manufactured was the average of the number of bikes and cars manufactured that year.
- The company manufactured 10% fewer cars in 2021 than in 2022.
- The total number of vehicles produced in 2022 was 1,20,000.
